| About | Obituary for Dorothy Murphy Sempsey Dorothy Murphy Sempsey, age 62, of Alexandria, VA passed away on Saturday Dec. 12, 2015. She was the beloved mother of Emily Marinelli (Dan), Zachary M., and R.J. Sempsey and devoted and doting grandmother to Molly and Hunter Marinelli of Smyrna, DE. She is also survived by her siblings Sharon Hernandez of Newark, DE; Lisa Hammond of Scottsdale, AZ; Brian Murphy of Newark, DE and Jeff Murphy of Landenberg, PA. She is predeceased by her parents and her husband Robert. "Dottie" was the first child born to Joseph F. and Patricia M. Murphy on Dec. 1, 1953. The family settled in the Wilmington area where Dottie attended school at Springer and graduated from Unionville High School near Kennett Square, PA in 1972. She went to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where she met her future husband and graduated in 1976. The couple took to the area and Dottie was an early staffer for congressman Bob Edgar of Pennsylvania and raised their children in nearby Alexandria, VA. Dottie was smart, gentle and soft spoken with a big heart and a loving smile. Later in life, she returned to work but loved her free time attending Washington Nationals games, going to the beach and reveling in the company of her grandchildren. Friends may call at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA on Saturday, December 19 at 1 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel.
