About Bertha "Bert"; (Pohley) Marsh, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg. She was born July 20, 1915, in South Huntingdon Township, a daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Brandenberg) Pohley. Bertha attended local schools and graduated from high school in 1932. She attended Geneva College, earned a teaching credential and taught in the South Huntingdon Township schools. Bertha was married to James C. Marsh, then with the Air Force, and moved with him to the various bases where he served. Bertha continued her studies toward a degree in teaching at California State Teachers College in Pennsylvania and at the University of Redlands in the state of California. After receiving her bachelor's degree, she taught for several years in the Colton, Calif., Public Schools. Jim and Bert had two sons, Richard James, born in 1947, and William Leigh, born in 1950. Jim and Bert returned to West Newton in 1982 to make their home. She was a member of Sewickley Presbyterian Church and was involved in many volunteer organizations. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1994; by brothers, Joseph and Fred Pohley; and by sisters, Mabel Pohley, Emma Bellan and Elizabeth Ometz. She is survived by sons, Richard, of Denver, Colo., and William, of Batavia, Ill.; and sister, Edith, of Redstone Highlands in Greensburg; as well as many nieces, nephews and other cherished relatives. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., 901 Vine St., West Newton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Eric N. Glisan officiating. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
