John F. Horvat, 46, of Rillton, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004. He was born Jan. 16, 1958, in Greensburg, a son of the late John G. and Grace (Delose) Horvat. John was a graduate of Yough Senior High School, Class of 1976, and also attended and completed a number of classes at Westmoreland County Community College. Prior to retirement due to health reasons, John was employed with the U.S. Postal Service in Greensburg as a letter carrier. He was a member of St. Edward Roman Catholic Church, Herminie. John's God-given talent and life-long passion was being a firefighter with the Rillton Volunteer Fire Department, Station #14, where he had 32 years of service. He held all executive positions with the department through the years, one of which was safety officer where he was very visible in the community for many years. His additional memberships included the Fire Police #14-3, Westmoreland County Firemens Association, Westmoreland County Fire Chiefs Association and Mon-Yough Fire Defense Council. John was a social member of the Rillton VFW, where he recently was honored the Patriotism Award for flying the American flag every day for years at his residence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Charles Woods; and sister-in-law, Cheryl Woods. John is survived by his wife of 10 years, Carol (Woods) Horvat; stepdaughter, Michelle Guerrieri, of Herminie; mother-in-law, Martha Woods, of Beaver; sister-in-law, Claudia Griffin and her husband, Robert, of Beaver; a number of aunts, uncles and cousins; and brothers and sisters in fire service. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, 724-446-7251, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 p.m. in St. Edward Roman Catholic Church, Herminie, with Father Thomas Trupkovich as celebrant. Prior to interment at Westmoreland County Memorial Park, a service of "Last Call" will be held at his home fire station, Rillton Volunteer Fire Department, Station #14. The Rillton Volunteer Fire Department, Station #14, will meet for services Monday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. A St. Edward Parish Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home. |
