About | Obituary for Joseph A. Magliocco Magliocco, Jr., Joseph A., 84 of 7 Mill Lane, Portsmouth, passed away Monday, November 17, 2014 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Monica K. Magliocco. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Rose (D'Andrea) Magliocco. He was the father of the late Joy P. Magliocco and the brother of the late Ann M. Perreault. He graduated from Cranston High School in 1948; and went on to graduate from URI in 1960 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. In 1962 he returned to RI to work as a Physical Education teacher, football, track & field, and wrestling coach at Middletown High School, where he stayed for over 30 years. In his 25 years as Head Coach starting in 1965, Magliocco lead the Islander's to four Super Bowls, three of which ended in victories. At Middletown his team participated in four Rhode Island Super Bowls, winning three. In 1973, he lead the Islander's to the first RI Interscholastic League Super Bowl as the 'A' Small champion. Following his retirement from teaching, Joe joined Portsmouth High School as an assistant coach where that team appeared in four Rhode Island super Bowls. Joe was past President of the RI Football Coaches Association and is presently Vice President of the Gridiron Club and a member of its Hall of Fame. In 2012, he was inducted into the Middletown High School Athletic Hall of Fame, along with 3 of his former players. |
