About | MIDDLETOWN - Nina M. Smith, age 60, of Middletown, Rhode Island and Naples, Florida passed away on September 14, 2018 after a two year struggle with ALS. Nina was born at the Newport Naval Hospital to the late John Gawalt and Mary Ann (Moschini) Gawalt. Nina was the wife of Richard Smith of Middletown for the last 29 years. She graduated from Middletown High School and attended CCRI. She began her career in banking with the Bank of Newport. She became the co-founder and Senior Vice President of Pride Mortgage where she worked for many years. More recently she returned to Citizens Bank in Providence as the Appraisal Review Manager. Nina was an active member of the RI Mortgage Bankers Association. Richard and Nina enjoyed time in Naples, Florida, where she enjoyed walking the beach collecting seaglass and shells and turning them into art. She also took great pride in keeping her garden. Nina is survived by husband Richard Smith, her mother Mary Ann Gawalt of Middletown, a stepson Matthew Smith of Providence, RI, a stepdaughter Alyson Smith and husband Rob Patton of Toronto, Canada, her granddaughter Lucy Patton, and her siblings John Gawalt of Virginia, Paul Gawalt of Virigina, Marie Gawalt-Nunes of Newport RI, Angela Osborne of Hawaii, and Barbara Kaler of Washington. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. |
