About | NEWPORT – Patrick H. Martin, 58, of Chapel Street Newport, died Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Newport Hospital, after being stricken while surfing at “Ruggles”. Born in Newport on Nov. 9, 1953. He was a son of the late John Maloney “Peanuts” Martin and Mary E. (Murray) Martin. Pat was affectionately known by all as "Shep.” He attended St. Mary’s School and De La Salle Academy, where he was a star basketball player. He later graduated from Middletown High School and URI. He moved to California and was a long time and beloved employee of the Chart House in San Diego. After working at the Chart House he became very interested in computers and he founded the Sheppard Group, which was a very successful technology consulting firm. While on the West Coast, Shep was an avid surfer and would take trips from Mexico to Oregon to Hawaii in search of the perfect wave. After many years of searching, he discovered that perfect wave was in his hometown of Newport. He moved back home to be with his friends and family. While in Newport, he worked at Water Brothers Surf Shop and will always be remembered an "Original Water Brother.” He was the brother of the late Peter John Martin. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown at 9 a.m. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held Monday, May 14, 2012 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport from 4-7 p.m. |
