About | John “Big John” Winford Abernathy died at his home in Oakland on October 20, 2022. He was 76. Funeral Services will be held at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 24 at 2 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow the funeral service. John was born in Memphis on September 17, 1946, and grew up in Millington, Tenn. He was a graduate of Millington Central High School and played football during that time. He also played touch football at the Memphis Park Commission “A” league for several years. He attended the University of Tennessee and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Tennessee Volunteer fan. John enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He also loved spending time with family, cooking out and reading. During his working career he was employed at the Navy Exchange food service and a family-owned meat market. He was the owner of a restaurant and was an industrial supply salesman for Pigeon Thomas Iron Company and Reichman Crosby Hays Company. His last employment was with TG Baker Trucking, Inc. John was preceded in death by his parents, Winford Abernathy and Margaret Tanner Abernathy Ingram. He is survived by three brothers, Mark, George and Danny; a daughter, Jill; a son, Jeff; four granddaughters; and three great-great grandchildren. |
