About Mr. Hollis died May 30, 2011, in Gilmer. He was born July 15, 1948, in Upshur County and graduated from Union Hill High School, East Texas Baptist University, East Texas State University and Stephen F. Austin State University. He was a member of North Tenneha Church of Christ and a retired administrator of 39 years with Tyler Independent School District. He was Region VII nominee for TAASP, Principal of the Year in 1998, received PTA Life Membership Award in 1992, member Tyler Organization of Men-Recognition of Membership Committee (1991), nominated into the ETBC Hall of Fame-East Texas Baptist University, and received an NAIA All-American Award in Basketball in 1972. He was preceded in death by his mother, Overa Hollis, and father, Nathaniel Hollis Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Ara Hollis, Tyler; daughters, Ara Natasha Hollis, Tyler, and Natalie Michelle Hollis (Brian), Plano; stepmother, Betty Hollis, Gilmer; sisters, Teathel Hollis, Gilmer, Zama Hollis Claiborne, Garland, Jo Ann Griffin (Peter), Arlington, Sandra Hollis, Gilmer, and Lois Hollis Avery (Frank), Texas City; brothers, Billy Ray Hollis (Ida Mae), Gilmer, Rufus Hollis (Patricia), Grand Prairie, Curtis Hollis (Lola), Gilmer, Jimmy Hollis (Robbie), Duncanville, Michael Hollis (Cassandra), Cross Roads, and Christopher Hollis (Sherene), Longview; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Calhoun and Georgia Harmon, LaRue; brother-in-law, John R. Harmon (Cheryl), Tyler; and a host of other beloved, family, friends and a lasting legacy on the lives of young people.
