About | Principal "Bill" William Hoyt Sweet, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 4, 2015, in a Mineral Wells nursing home. Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Woodland Park Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. He was born May 16, 1927, in Fort Worth, the only child of James Swayne and Alice Mae Conine Sweet. He attended public schools in Fort Worth, graduating from Paschal High School in 1944. Bill attended his beloved Texas Christian University on a football scholarship, with a break to join the Navy during World War II. After graduating from TCU, Bill took his first coaching job in Electra, Texas, where he met his wife, Patsy Joan Able, and where they had their only child, Shannon Sweet Bailey. The family moved to Mineral Wells in July 1955, where Bill coached and taught for 10 years. After receiving his master's degree from TCU, Bill became assistant principal at Mineral Wells High School before moving up to the position of principal. After a heart attack in 1974, Mr. Sweet became principal of Cullen Grimes Elementary until his retirement in 1983. Following his retirement, Bill spent many enjoyable hours on the golf course and following all TCU sporting events. Survivors include his wife and daughter; granddaughters, Laura and Mairin Bailey; sister-in-law, Barbara Parker and her family; brother-in-law, Bobby Able and his family; and his extended family, including several dear cousins, among them Doug Tatum, Jerry Pitts and Norma Jean Raymond.
