About | Carolyn Cornette Vaught passed away at Texoma Medical Center at the age of 76 on August 27, 2023, after a lengthy and arduous battle with cancer. Carolyn is survived by her children Margaret Vaught Newman and husband James of Sherman, Texas, and Susan Vaught Stockstill and husband Ray of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, along with her precious Pekingese, Ruby, who was the light of her life. Carolyn was born in Sherman to Dr. James Clarke Cornette, Jr. and Margaret Foard Cornette. She was the first member of the family to be born in Texas, but she lived for the summertime when they would return to their native North Carolina to spend vacations. Carolyn’s affection for Lenoir and Edgemont, NC was deep rooted and a part of her for the rest of her life. Carolyn was an accomplished pianist and a Junior Classical League scholarship recipient. She graduated from Sherman High School as the valedictorian of the Class of 1965. She attended Austin College but discontinued her studies to raise her girls. Carolyn worked in the insurance industry in the Dallas area for Steak and Ale, MKW, and Blue Cross Blue Shield, making many dear and lifelong friends during her professional years. Retiring in 2000, she returned to Sherman to enjoy life with her treasured canine companions over the years. She was always a passionate supporter of the ASPCA, Humane Society, and the Disabled American Veterans. Carolyn was a collector of many things, from antiques to artwork, as well as friends from every walk of life. Along with her daughters and Ruby, Carolyn is also survived by her sister Frances Cornette Phillips (Fred) of Sherman, and sister Sally Cornette Laughlin of Richardson; nephews Allen Phillips of Plano, and David Laughlin of Dallas; great nieces and nephews Lilah, Ryan and Simon Phillips and London, Jones and Clarke Laughlin; cherished friends Linda Clarke, Debbie Lindsay Paige, and Sipriano Gonzales. Carolyn’s family wishes to express deep appreciation to her high school classmate and friend, Darla Williamson James, for her invaluable support during Carolyn’s illness, in addition to the TMC 8th Floor Nursing Staff for the kind and compassionate care they provided for her in her final days. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Denison Animal Welfare Group (DAWG). A gathering to celebrate Carolyn’s life was held on her birthday, October 28, 2023, at the Sherman Musuem. |
