Jake was a strong believer in cancer research and any donations will be given to cancer research facilities, such as START, where Jake was a patient earlier this year.
Jake was born Feb. 24, 1983, in Fort Worth to Johnny and Carolyn Cartwright. He graduated from Western Hills High School in 2001, where he played soccer for four years. He attended Tarleton State University for two years, but transferred to Sam Houston State University, where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in speech communications and a minor in journalism. While at Sam Houston, Jake played men's club soccer while also coaching the team. He also became team manager of the collegiate women's soccer team. After graduation, Jake worked briefly for InSight Global as an IT recruiter before being diagnosed with cancer in April 2007. Jake inspired many people with the blog he kept about his cancer "journey" and he fought hard to beat the cancer until the very end. He was a hero to all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
Jake was preceded in death by his grandfathers, James Harold Cartwright and Donald "Jake" Siewert; his stepgrandfather, Gerald Wayne Marzahn; and "adopted" grandparents, Dick and Frieda Phillips.
Survivors: Parents, Johnny and Carolyn Cartwright; sister, Sarah Jung; brother-in-law, Chad Jung; nephew, Riley Jung; grandmothers, Mayme Marzahn and Ruth Siewert; his "regular", Lisa Gavia; his chocolate lab, Samson; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
