He was born in Charlottesville, VA on June 13, 1951 and lived there until he was 20, when he left to head west. He graduated from Albemarle High School and went on to graduate summa cum laude from the "University of Life" as he referred to it. He was well known in the Texas Hill Country as "Cowboy Doug Davis", a respected musician and cowboy poet. Recent performances with Bill Lewis as The Elderly Brothers have kept the crowds entertained. Cowboy poetry was written under the alias of Johnny Inkslinger and demonstrated his deep insight into the cowboy experience. He worked as a cowboy on ranches from Montana to Texas and worked with race horses at Churchill Downs (KY), Belmont (NY), and Fairgrounds in New Orleans. Other jobs included tree surgeon, camp cook, bartender, door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman, cutting horse riding and jumping, cab driver, roughneck, and writer. He had parts in several movies including the 2004 film "The Alamo." Doug is survived by his father, Roger Caldwell Davis; his brother, Jeffrey Brooks Davis and sister-in-law, Cynthia Askren Davis of Gainesville, FL; nephews Joel Brooks Davis of Berkley, CA and Alan Tracy Davis of New York, NY; his beloved friend, Charlotte Autrey of San Angelo, TX; his elderly Brother, Bill Lewis, and the many members of his "musical family" in the area around Fredericksburg, TX. |
