About | Deborah “Debbie Stone” Madison of DeWitt, 57, departed this life into her eternal home, November 16, 2018. Born November 26, 1960, Debbie was the daughter of the late Mary and Webster Madison. At an early age, Debbie joined the Center Star Baptist Church where she joined the ministries of Tot Choir, Junior Choir, Junior Usher and Junior Missionary Circle. Debbie also served as youth delegate in the annual meetings of the Ebenezer Baptist Association for her church. Debbi was a 1979 graduate of Dinwiddie County High. During her tenure as a student, Debbie was an outstanding athlete for Dinwiddie High School from 1976-1979 where she played softball and basketball. In Basketball she started as point guard as a freshman and went on to make All District and All Regional Honors yearly. TWICE, Debbie was named the Progress-Index Player of the Year in the Central District for her offensive ability to score points, her hustle, and her quickness. Debbie was the FIRST female basketball player to break the 1,000 point ceiling at Dinwiddie High School. In softball, Debbie was a shortstop with a rocket arm. She was fast on the bases and loved the game. She made District and Regional Honors each year. She played competitive softball for the DC Kids and later with the Virginia Belles where her team won State and National Championships. Debbie was a member of the P.E. Majors club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the DCHS Marching band and concert band, where she placed first chair in flute and piccolo. After graduation, Debbie received a full ride scholarship to Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. As an ECSU student, Debbie joined the sisterhood of the Alpha Kappa Alpha family (AKA) in 1982. Debbie graduated from Elizabeth City State University with her Bachelors in Health & Physical Education. Upon 1983 graduation from ECSU, Debbie was employed with the DCPS, where she worked as a Health and Physical Education teacher at Dinwiddie County Middle School, lead the D.A.R.E. program, was coach of the J.V. and Varsity Basketball teams, and J.V. and Varsity Softball teams. Debbie’s basketball teams were very successful going to District and Regional playoff events. In addition to her public school work, Debbie served as a district and regional referee for sports events. Debbie was inducted into the Dinwiddie Sports Club Hall of Fame, for her athletic ability and her Dinwiddie General Spirit of Competitiveness. She was also a die-hard Steelers fan. Debbie leaves behind, three devoted cousins, Jean Vaughan, of Washington D.C., Mrs. Dorothy Walker (William), of DeWitt, Virginia and Willie Gilliam, Jr. of Chesterfield. A devoted friend, John Gilliam, a devoted cousin, Richard Allen (Anita), of Virginia Beach and a host of other cousins. Debbie held a special place in her heart for her cousin, Miss Zamiyah Lyons of DeWitt and her extended family. Debbie cherished and loved a group of parental friends, Catherine Gilliam, Ruth and James Queen, Jr. Debbie leaves behind many, many, devoted friends, to include, Cheryl Sharron, James Spence, Leo Taylor, Barbara Pittman, Barbara Stevens, and the D.C. Kids softball team and Delores Weaver, DC Giant Ball Players. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Center Star Baptist Church, Dinwiddie with the Rev. Dr. Jimmie L. Walker Sr., officiating |
