GRAYSON YATES
Grayson Yates, 90, of Abingdon, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Yates was born Jan. 23, 1910 to Ab and Virgie "Dolly" Yates at Omaha in Dickenson County. He was the second of eight children, all of whom have preceded him in death: Roxie Cochran Fleming, Carl Yates, Morris Yates, Cova Yates, Kipling Yates, Rhea Stanley and Giles Yates.

He was married to Grace Carty on Thanksgiving Day of 1933 and she preceded him in death on July 15, 1999.

Mr. Yates attended King College and was a graduate of National Business College and Bowling Green Business School. For 38 years, he taught in various schools in Dickenson County. He began the first commercial department in that school system.

Early in his life, Mr. Yates was active in his community. He was a member of Clintwood Masonic Lodge, the Shriners and the Lion's Club. He belonged to his professional organizations, the Dickenson Educational Association and the National Educational Organization and was past president of the Virginia 4-H Leaders Association. He was a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jolene and R.C. Hay of Abingdon; foster sister, Lillian Sifers of Powhatan; granddaughter, Megan Hay of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

Service were held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steven Pollard and Joe Sluss officiating. Interment followed in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. pallbearers were Benny Yates, Don Carty, Mack Rose, Nicholas Sluss, Asa Large, Darrell Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Puckett, Rocky Carty, Carroll Baker and the Abingdon Baptist Church family.

Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, was in charge of arrangements.
