About | Deborah 'Debbi' Berry, 50, passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2007. A lifelong Newport News resident, Debbi was a Math Teacher and Athletic Director at Heritage High School. She had also been a math teacher, cheerleading, softball, and JV basketball coach, and the flag and baton leader at Ferguson High School. Debbi was a 1979 Graduate of Virginia Tech, where she was a member of the first Civilian Marching Virginians band, and a member of the orchestra. She received her teaching certificate from Christopher Newport College, and her Masters from the University of Phoenix. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #25, the Eastern Virginia Athletic Directors Association, and the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association. Debbi was preceded in death by her father, William G. Berry, and her grandmother, Izora Annalee Twigg. Survivors include her mother, Bernice 'Bea' Berry, her sister, Sandi Shooter, and her husband, Jeff, and two nephews, William 'Garrett' and Owin Lawrence Shooter, all of Newport News; also her partner of 9 1/2 years, Charlene 'Char' Ballengee, of Hampton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church by Father Ken Wood. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to Heritage High School Athletic Fund, in Deborah Berry's name. |
