About Principal

He was born in Everett, Washington on January 17, 1936 to Daniel Carl and Lucille Organ. The family lived in Everett until Dan was five and then moved to Seattle where Dan went to school until he graduated from Ballard High School in 1953. In high school, he played football and participated in track. After graduation he went to Central Washington College of Education in Ellensburg. While he was there, he met his future wife Ann. As a junior he was a Grey Gown and led the senior class into graduation.

Dan and Ann married the summer following their graduation from college and Dan attended graduate school at the University of Washington. The following year they moved to Everett when he accepted a job at Everett High School, remaining there for five years. The first two of their children, Margaret and Jamie, were born there.

Missing eastern Washington sunshine, Dan accepted a job with the Yakima School District where he taught history and helped develop the humanities courses. During this time, their third child, David, was born. In 1970 he accepted a position in federal programs, and worked part-time for the Superintendent of Public Instruction, evaluating programs throughout the state. He published several articles in educational journals.

After this he was assistant to the superintendent, Dean Starr, and finished his career as principal at Eisenhower High School. While he was principal, Redbook named Eisenhower as the best high school in the state.

Dan retired and started a business, Porthallow Consulting, working for individuals, businesses, and school districts including as a federal programs manager for Toppenish School District.

Dan’s life was not entirely about education. He was a parishioner at St. Timothy’s for over fifty years and served on the vestry as well as in the role of lay reader. He loved travel and especially enjoyed traveling to Europe and Hawaii whenever he could. Closer to home, he and Ann bought an RV and travelled from the Southwest US to Canada, but their favorite destination was Snee Oosh near LaConner. He also liked working on his farm where he raised chickens, goats, miniature horses, spaniels and the occasional barn cat.

Recently Dan and Ann moved to Monroe, Washington to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
