About Gary Robert Gale, 59 died Nov. 1, 2002, after a short illness in Phoenix, Ariz. His family was by his side.

A memorial service was held Nov. 16 in Yakima, Wash. Burial took place at Terrace Heights Memorial Park in Yakima. A celebration of life will be held Dec. 14 in Phoenix.

Mr. Gale was born Oct. 31, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo. He was raised and educated in Yakima.

Mr. Gale served in the U.S. Army Special Forces as a Green Beret from 1962-66 in Wiesbaden, Germany.

He brought his family to Fairbanks in 1967 and flew DC-3 aircraft for Wien Air Alaska on the DEW Line until his home was flooded in the 1967 Fairbanks flood.

He returned to Anchorage in 1968 and flew for Reeve Aleutian Air, returning to Wien in 1969. When Wien Air discontinued operations in 1984, Mr. Gale became a pilot for Total Air, a charter airline. While living in Anchorage, Mr. Gale was a licensed Realtor. He was also a member of Anchorage Lutheran Church.

He left the state when he moved to Singapore Airlines, where he flew as a 747 captain for the next 11 years.

He is survived by his mother, June Larson of Federal Way, Wash.; sons, Brent of Phoenix and Josh of Missoula, Mont.; daughter, Tami English, and granddaughters, Danielle and Hannah English, all of Anchorage; and extended family and friends all over the world.
