| About | Marianne Philipp Skotdal, 75, passed away November 10, 2016. She was born in Yakima, Washington on March 3, 1941 to Walt and Marian Philipp. Marianne attended Eisenhower High School in the Yakima Valley and graduated in 1959. She was a member of the school’s inaugural class, and helped form the traditions and spirit of the new school as a cheerleader. After graduating, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and her teaching certificate from Western Washington University. While attending the UW, she was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Marianne became involved in the Everett community as a school teacher and librarian for the Everett School District from 1964 to 1972. She taught second and third grade at View Ridge, Whittier, and Longfellow Elementary Schools. She later followed her passion for literature and shared her love of reading as a librarian at Whittier and Lowell Elementary Schools. While teaching school, she met and married her husband, Art, with whom she celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary last February. The two would become life partners in many pursuits, including a small but growing real estate business. Art and Marianne shared a common vision for investing in their hometown and making it a better place. Together, they focused their time and energy on revitalizing Everett’s urban center, including building their own home, Colby Place, at the intersection of Hewitt and Colby in 1992. Behind the scenes, Marianne was involved in every project, influencing design and development decisions. She had a special passion for urban beautification, which is reflected in the architectural quality and abundant flowers that define many properties developed by the Skotdal family through the years. Marianne was also an active and integral leader who earned the love and respect of every member of the team in the daily operations of Skotdal Real Estate. For all who met her, Marianne was most known for her warmth and sincerity. An avid knitter, she loved giving handmade baby caps, sweaters and booties to friends and family who were celebrating birth announcements. She listened deeply, asked thoughtful and insightful questions, and made everyone around her feel special and loved. Marianne’s thoughtful personal notes and her welcoming personality were her hallmarks, ones that will live on in all the recipients of her many daily kindnesses. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Marianne is survived by her husband, Art; two sons, Craig and Andrew, Andrew’s wife Dana, and loving grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Cole. A public reception to celebrate her life will be held at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel at 3003 Colby Avenue on November 20th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
