About Elsie Beryl Amos Freeland passed away unexpectedly on February 26, 2011. Elsie was born on October 4, 1923 in Fairmont, West Virginia, the daughter of Curt E. and Beryl M. Amos. After graduating from West Fairmont High School, Elsie earned an A.A. at the Washington School for Secretaries and a B.A. at West Virginia University. Following her graduation, Elsie worked as a translator for Stemco Import/Export Co. in Washington, DC. While living in Washington, she became reacquainted with her future husband, the late Joseph Lynn Freeland, originally of Barackville, WV. Elsie and Joe were married in 1947, after which she earned her PhT (Putting Hubby Through college) degree by working as a bookkeeper and later an office manager at Purdue University. Elsie and Joe moved to Melbourne, FL in 1956, when Joe came to Florida to work in the space program; he later became base manager for Aerojet Liquid Rocket at KSC%u2019s Eastern Test Range. Together they were instrumental in aiding in the growth and development of the Old Eau Gallie portions of Melbourne. Elsie raised her three children in Brevard County, and she was active for many years in local activities, including the PTA, boy scouting, substitute teaching, gardening, and Audubon bird counts.



Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents Curt E. and Beryl M. Amos, her sister Elizabeth Ann Amos Welch, and her brother Robert Morgan Amos. She is survived by three children: Sharon F. Morford (James) of Zelienople, PA; Joseph C. Freeland (Sally Goldberg) of Edwardsburg, MI; and Robert F. Freeland (Jodi Lerner) of Madison, WI; two children of her heart but not her blood, Kellie B. Freeland of West Lafayette, IN; and H. Raymond. Grice (Gayle) of Melbourne; four Grandchildren: Shaun C. Freeland of Oakland, CA; Phillip J. Morford of Zelienople, PA; Lori J. Wrobel (Thomas) of Ravenna, OH; and Erin C. Freeland of St Joseph, MI; and two great grandchildren: Emily E. Wrobel of Ravenna, OH and Matthew M. Wrobel of Ravenna, OH. While Elsie touched the lives of many friends and neighbors over the years, her deepest love and commitment were reserved for her family %u2013 her husband, her children, and especially her grandchildren. She was generous and caring, fiercely loyal and protective, and always ready to put her family%u2019s well-being before her own. It is hard to imagine life without her.



A memorial service will be held on at South Brevard Funeral Home in Melbourne, Florida on March 5, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to in Elsie%u2019s name to Purdue University School of Engineering or The Purdue University Bands, the Parkinson Foundation, or The Audubon Society.
