David Alan Edwards Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1960
Date of Passing Feb 26, 2023
About On Sunday, February 26, 2023, David Alan Edwards, a retired Veteran and father of three, passed away at the age of 80. David was born on August 27, 1942 in South Charleston, West Virginia to James and Mable (Harrison) Edwards. He received his psychology degree from West Virginia University. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1966 until July 1987. He was a decorated pilot in the Vietnam War. He is survived by his three children, Stephanie (James) Albert, David Alan Edwards, Jr., and Sean David Edwards; four grandchildren, Michaela, Nicole, Alyssa, and Christopher. David was preceded in death by his oldest sibling, Sue Robbins and nephew, Eric Edwards, and survived by his other two siblings, Nancy Gwyn and Tom Edwards and several other cousins, nieces, and nephews. After retiring from the Navy, he did not want to give up flying planes. So he continued his piloting career with Orion Airlines. Even after he hung up his wings as a pilot, his fascination for planes continued. There was not a plane overhead that he wouldn’t stop and lift his eyes to the sky to identify. Later in life he reinvented himself and became a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker. He was a natural salesperson and also was respected by his fellow agents for his willingness to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed strengthening his mind and his body. He started each day doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. He liked keeping a strong physique by lifting weights, doing daily pushups (sometimes even 100!), and walking. But his favorite pastime was playing tennis. He played through his 70’s and loved the camaraderie he experienced with his fellow tennis club friends. He maintained a positive attitude, even when his health had started to decline. When someone would casually ask “How are you?” He would quickly answer, “Never better!” A Memorial Service honoring the life of David will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery to celebrate his birthday. It will be held on August 25, 2023. Details TBD. Open to all that knew him. Contributions can be made to American Cancer Society in honor of David’s valiant fight over esophageal cancer. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, 604 43rd Street West Bradenton, FL 34209 is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be made to: www.brownandsonsfuneral.com
