Carl Howard Schmidt was born on May 13, 1964, in Watertown, the son of Howard and Marcelaine “Marcy” (née Gaugert) Schmidt. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1982. Carl married the former Heidi Will on September 18, 1993, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Carl’s career began shortly after graduation when he joined REDIGAS as a propane delivery driver, a position he proudly held for his entire working life. Carl liked to keep busy, which led him to often take on a second job.

Carl’s passion for the outdoors was a defining part of his life. Whether hunting deer or bear, fishing in all its forms, or trapping, he found joy and fulfillment in nature. The family cabin in Delta was especially dear to him. Carl took great pride in restoring John Deere tractors, combining his mechanical skills with a deep appreciation for classic craftsmanship. He also found peace in “making wood,” spending hours chopping and ensuring there was always an abundant supply.

Carl is survived by his wife, Heidi; children, Micayla (Aaron) Smebak and Colton Schmidt; grandson, Bennett Smebak, with another grandchild expected in the spring; his mother, Marcy Schmidt; and many beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Schmidt.
