Events | Pat Schauer was a resident of Watertown, WI, United States. He had raced short tracks in the Wisconsin area for several years. He had participated in several ASA races in previous years, but not enough to lose his rookie eligibility. This year, he had run the entire ASA circuit, and was leading the rookie point race, and was sixth in the overall point standings. His best finish was third at Michigan International Speedway on September 20, which gained him much attention. On this occasion, Schauer was running second after 389 laps of the "Winchester 400" when Terry Senneker hit the wall on the main stretch and slid down the track in front of him. Schauer attempted to miss him by going low and hit a heavy steel gate on the inside concrete wall. He was taken to Randolph County Hospital in Winchester, IN, where he died soon after without regaining consciousness. Pat Schauer was survived by his wife, Mary, and three children. Funeral services were held in his hometown of Watertown, WI. He was buried in Saint Bernards Cemetery, Watertown, WI.
